A DIY child resistant litter box that your cats will love! (Gallery)
This litter box design will deter nosy children from playing in the cat's 'sandbox'.
And also deter dogs from eating the frosted treats that cats like to bury...
Here's the finished product!
"It has two windows in the front (to check if it needs to be cleaned) and a cat door on the side," daidougei shares on imgur.
Drawer
"It opens up as a drawer so that child-safe locks can be put on it. The cat door was placed on the left to be mostly hidden from view."
The "before" picture
"The problem with this was mostly that our friends babies desperately wanted to "play with the sand." Our son is seven months old, so I'm now working on slowly making our home safer for children."
The drawer
"It needed to accommodate two different brands of litter box since we found a whole box of "pee sheets" that we hadn't used. Both styles use a drawer in the bottom to catch the pee."
Rollers
"I got these rollers from some junk furniture we threw away years ago. The drawer races are probably strong enough, but since the drawer is a bit heavy I thought rollers would be a good idea."
Window design
"The litter box needs windows so we can see if it needs cleaning. In child-safing the house, I took the glass doors off of our Ikea Träby in the kitchen, so the windows are sized to recycle that glass by attaching it on the inside. I determined with just the circle, the glass is still likely to get broken, so a centre cross would not only be stronger, but would allow me to install screens instead of glass and still see in."
Strengthening top
"As we will have a toddler soon, I thought it was a good idea to make it strong enough for him to jump on despite the fact that I will repeatedly tell him not to."
Everything but the trim
"The drawer moves more smoothly than I'd expected. Just have to add trim, sand and paint!"
Transgender-friendly!
"Since they all got fixed at the vet, our cats have been confused about their gender identities. This cat box is for all our cats."
Pretty sweet!
