Wonderful pictures capture the secret lives of Hong Kong's shop cats (Gallery)
Photographer Marcel Heijnen was walking around his new neighborhood of Sai Ying Pun in Hong Kong when he noticed an adorable trend in many of the traditional shops.
Cats. Real cats living in shops ready to greet customers! Marcel was fascinated by these “working cats of Hong Kong” so he decided to document their secret lives.
You can find his photos on Instagram or in his new book Hong Kong Shop Cats.
Heijnen regards the small stores where the cats lounge and doze as “beautiful photogenic subjects in their own right.” They are places where, says Heijnen, “time seems to have stood still, devoid of branding and all the other modern-day retail trickery we’ve grown accustomed to”.
The Hong Kong cats are regarded as lucky, Heijnen notes in his book, and from his photos, they clearly provide companionship.
