How to help the pets hit by Hurricane Harvey
Hurricane Harvey has hit Texas pretty hard over the past few days, leaving unprecedented levels of flooding.
People and their pets are suffering. Many pets were left behind during the evacuation, and the animals in shelters hit by the hurricane are in desperate need of help.
We here at iizcat would like to ask our awesome community to give a hand in any way that you can.
One organization we found is Austin Pets Alive! which has been monumental in the rescuing of animals and has been helping shelters in the direct line of Hurricane Harvey.
“We’ve been working with these shelters to transport as many pets as possible to APA! and as of Saturday morning, we’ve transported over 235 animals to our shelter. Because of the incredible, humbling support we’ve received from the community thus far, we have been able to remove some items from our needs list completely,” the rescue shared on their website.
However, there is still a lot of work ahead of us.
In addition to the animals APA! has already saved, there are going to get bombarded with even more animals in the next coming days.
There have been reports of shelters not only being overrun, but being completely shut down thanks to Harvey. People are also abandoning their pets and surrendering them, so APA! needs to be ready to help.
For APA!, the repercussions of this hurricane will last for weeks, if not months.
Here is how you can help.
1. Financial Donations
You can donate to their website here at the bottom of their page.
2. Fosters
APA! will provide you with the supplies needed to help. You can fill out the dog foster application here and cat foster application here.
3. Supplies
Specifically:
1. Large plastic or metal bins with lids so we can safely store food and goods in dry places.
2. Leashes + Martingale Collars (any size)
3. Cat Litter – Clumping preferred, but non-clumping needed, as well.
4. 6 full-size indoor brooms
5. Cat Beds (not regular bedding)
6. Liquid laundry soap
You can check out more of their needs here.
4. Volunteers
You can sign up and register as a volunteer here.
5. Adoptions
With all the influx of pets rushing through their doors, APA! will need great homes to adopt our fur friends out.
All available cats and dogs are listed on their website.
Please share this info with your friends and help our fur friends in need!
There are plenty of other oganizations in need of help as well. Do your research and give what you can!
